April 30 The MooseThe first I heard about the moose was when David emailed me about a moose that bent over our gate at camp. Apparently a car spooked the moose. The moose definitely left some calling cards at our place.
When I arrived there, the moose was found walking around in circles on the frozen lake. The MNR was called out to investigate because the moose seemed to be in distress. However, the MNR people would not go out on the ice due to "unsafe" conditions. Apparently they need 8 inches of solid ice to do anything It was suspected that the moose had brain worm and was in the last stage of life. Moose and deer cannot share the same land area since the moose can get brain worm from deer and die. The following reference describes the disease and interesting life cycle of it: http://www.usask.ca/wcvm/herdmed/specialstock/elk/diseases/Ptenuis.html For the next few days the moose blindly wandered around the bay. He would march around in circles and sometimes lie down to rest. The MNR was again called out by someone and they came over to our place to take a look. All they did was fire off some fire crackers to try to scare the moose to land but the animal did not budge. Just after Good Friday the moose came near our place by the point. We were away for Easter Sunday but found the moose apparently dead on Easter Monday. Most everyone did not want the animal to rot in our nice lake. David took the initiative to get the moose to shore so we could dispose of it. We got some rope and gathered some friends to do this. Initially I did not want to go due to the ice melting in the Spring sun light. After all, this was a few days after the first MNR folk refused to go on the ice. But the ice seemed all right out on the lake this day. We believe that this was one of the last days available for this operation. David, Malcolm, Sam, Carter and I dragged the moose along the smoother ice with the rope. Near shore the ice was snowy so Sam’s sail board came into use. Harry was going to use his truck to drag the moose to shore with a 60 foot chain. The ice near shore was not good. David fell down and got wet. As I was laughing at this I went through the ice up to my chest. My camera was in my pocket. Sam helped me out. The camera recovered after drying out for a few days. The moose was then easy to dispose of. And the lake was saved. There is a slide show on this page. I recommend viewing it in full mode.
